When X-Men: The Animated Series ended in 1997, it was arguably at the peak of its powers. The Resident is a Fox medical drama series that follows the lives of staff members at the fictional Chastain Park Memorial Hospital. Created by Amy Holden Jones, Hayley Schore, and Roshan Sethi, the series stars Matt Czuchry, Emily VanCamp, Manish Dayal, Shaunette Renée Wilson, and Bruce Greenwood, among others. Though largely panned by critics, The Resident proved to be quite popular with audiences during its six-season run on Fox. It’s very much a series for fans of TV medical dramas, though it does attempt to break out of the mold by focusing on the bureaucracy and greed of people in the medical world. While not 100% accurate to real life, the series shines a light on the darker side of the medical business, with doctors and patients who often fall below the ideals projected by other medical drama shows. The quality does dip towards the end, but for the most part, The Resident is an enjoyable series with great actors that explores some interesting aspects of the health industry in a way that most medical dramas don’t.

The narrative can be quite painful and messy at times, but it's all underscored by a dark and twisted sense of humor. One of the most highly anticipated video game adaptations in recent times, Fallout premiered on Prime Video on April 10, 2024, to critical acclaim. It’s also well-written, balancing faithfulness to the source material with a narrative that’s accessible to those who are new to the franchise. Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen is a spinoff series inspired by his 2019 film of the same name. Despite sharing its name and some elements of the plot with the 2019 film, The Gentlemen series is its own beast and is perhaps best enjoyed if taken as a separate story altogether. Steven Zaillian’s Ripley is a black-and-white period noir thriller that stars Andrew Scott as the titular grifter. Based on Patricia Highsmith’s Tom Ripley novels, the eight-episode miniseries also stars Dakota Fanning, Johnny Flynn, Eliot Sumner, and more. A Manhattan industrialist hires New York conman Tom Ripley (Scott) to go to Italy and convince his son (Flynn) to come home, but once there, Tom begins a journey of deceit, fraud, and violence as he tries to claw his way to wealth and comfort. While the source material has previously been adapted, Zaillian’s Ripley is unlike anything that’s come before. That’s largely thanks to the performances of the lead cast, who present complex, grounded characters who are neither fully good nor bad. The biggest draw of the series, however, is its mindblowing cinematography, which shows a masterful command of light and shadow that elevates the show from a thriller series to high art.

The show was ordered by the streamer in 2021 and tells the story of Emma and Dexter, who meet on the night of their graduation from university. The year is 1988, but we get to watch Emma and Dexter over the next 20 years on the same day of every year: July 15.

The show stars Leo Woodall (The White Lotus) as Dexter and Ambika Mod as Emma. The series also co-stars Amber Grappy, Brendan Quinn, Johnny Weldon (House of the Dragon), and Tim McInnerny (Notting Hill). Mr. & Mrs. Smith is based on the 2005 film of the same name starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. Based on the Dutch series De Verraders, The Traitors is like a childhood game of “Mafia” to the max, as a small group of players within the bunch are secretly marked as “Traitors” and eliminate contestants one by one without revealing their deceit. Those who aren’t Traitors are “Faithfuls,” whose job it is to figure out who the Traitors are in order to win the grand prize.

The Traitors is one of the most stunning reality shows you will ever watch. From the setting to the fashion to the interior design of the set, it is, from start to finish, a feast for the eyes. Host Alan Cumming (Schmigadoon!) is perfect for the role of host who says everything with a foreboding tone of voice while looking absolutely fabulous, and he makes the show all the more watchable, even if you’re not familiar with the contestants, all of whom come from previous reality shows like The Bachelor and Survivor. - Emily Cappello

The Great British Bake Off is a phenomenon. Starting in 2010, the show’s growth can be proven through its channel hopping. Originally premiering on BBCTwo, the GBBO moved to BBC due to its popularity, then signed a three-year deal after its seventh season to move to Channel 4 in the UK. Each season of the show features a group of amateur bakers who compete against one another in different rounds, hoping to wow the two judges of the show. One by one, contestants are eliminated until there is one winner left. Like the show’s habit of changing channels, there has also been a continual rotation of judges. The current judges are Paul Hollywood, an English celebrity chef, and Prue Leith, a South African restauranteur and author.

The BAFTA Award-winning show is called The Great British Baking Show in the United States, as “Bake-Off” is owned by Pillsbury. The GBBO has also had its share of spin-offs, including Junior Bake Off for kids, the after-show recap series An Extra Slice, and Bake Off: The Professionals, which includes teams of pastry chefs.
