Seven high schools in Wake win marching band honors Marching bands from seven Wake County high schools captured honors in band contests held recently across North Carolina. On Saturday, Millbrook High School captured the Pride of Garner award at the fifth annual Garner Band Classic at Garner High School.
The award, sponsored by NCNB National Bank of Garner, is presented to the band that best exemplifies discipline, spirit, loyalty and desire to do its best. Twenty-six bands from North Carolina and Virginia competed in four classes in the event sponsored by the Garner Band Boosters. Five Wake bands won awards in the competition. In Class AAAA, for bands with 81 or more playing members, Cary High School won second place band. Memorial Hospital Saturday night after being shot in the chest, and a boarder who lived in the victim's home for more than 20 years has been charged with first-degree murder. Orange County Sheriff Lindy A A. Pendergrass said Ernest Lee Pennix, 33, of Route 5, Chapel Hill died shortly after 11 p.m., an hour and a half after the shooting at his home on Willis Road, 8 miles west of Carrboro.
Henry Alexander Alston, 47, a boarder in Pennix's home, turned himself in at the Chapel Hill police station shortly after midnight Saturday. He i is being held without bond in the Orange County Jail and will have a first appearance this morning in Orange District Court in Hillsborough, Pendergrass said. Pendergrass said Pennix's 14- -old daughter, whom he didn't identify, witnessed the shooting. Pennix: and his daughter were preparing to leave their house about 9:30 p.m. in Pennix's car, Pendergrass said.
Pennix was siphoning gas from a truck to his car when a man came out of the house and told Pennix to move his car, which was parked in the driveway. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) A Plainview woman abducted from her home Monday night returned to Minnesota Saturday after she was found safe in Charlotte, N.C., where her former son-in-law was arrested as her suspected abductor. "I'm feeling fine, real good seeing my family." Verna Petty, 55, told reporters on her arrival at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport late Saturday afternoon. "I'm SO thankful to be home." Mrs. Petty's face was bruised, and authorities said she was treated at Charlotte Memorial Hospital before leaving for Minnesota.
Charlotte Police Capt. J.D. Price said John David Lander, 28, was arrested around 11 p.m. Friday and turned over to the FBI. Lander was being held at the Mecklenburg County Jail and was scheduled to appear this morning before a U.S.
magistrate. Price said Mrs. Petty was found by a security guard in the parking lot of an office building. He said she was in a car, which was not supposed to be parked in the lot at that hour. In a TV interview, security guard Warren Bobbitt said Mrs.
Petty told him her former son-inlaw had left her in the car "and told her to stay there or she'd never see her husband again." "She had two black eyes and a swollen left hand," Bobbitt said. "The passenger side window had been knocked out. She said he'd shot it out with a pellet gun." When police arrived, Mrs. Petty told them who she was and what had happened and said her abductor had gone to a nearby lounge, Price said. Soldier who died in wreck identified From Staff Reports A Fort Bragg soldier killed in a Saturday car accident was identified Sunday as Todd Alan Wolfe, the State Highway Patrol said. Wolfe, 22, was traveling north on N.C. 87 near Sanford at 1:03 a.m. Saturday when his car crossed the center line and struck a southbound car driven by Deborah H. Joliet of Sanford, Trooper R.A.
Jones said. Wolfe, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown onto the road's shoulder, and his car spun over him, Jones said. Ms. Joliet was in good condition Sunday at Carolina Central Hospital in Sanford, a hospital spokesman said. Donald Gaines of Goldston, a passenger in Ms.
